Skateboarders Against Society

5 Reasons Skateboarders get a bad Rep

  1. DRUGS: Skateboarders have been associated with drugs since skateboarding first began in the mid 1900's. There has always been an ongoing stereotype that all skateboarders smoke pot or do drugs, but this is simply not the case. In fact, there are those skateboarders who are actually doing something to break this stereotype. For example, pro skateboarder Richard Zuccarello started an organization called Skateboarders against Drugs in 2003 which is still its part in keeping kids off drugs and on their skateboards.
  2. IMAGE: It's no secret that skateboarders have their own image that is unlike any other. Today's skateboarder can be compared to the punk "rockers" of the 70's. However, skateboarding styles have changed just as much as skateboarding has over the years. All in all, skateboarders have never and will never fit the typical norm of society when it comes to dress.
  3. VANDALISM: Today's definition of vandalism is somewhat skewed when it comes to skateboarding. Granted, there are some skaters that break windows and graffiti walls, but most of them are just in it to have a good time and enjoy their favorite pass time. Skateboarding is frowned upon in most major cities of the U.S. as well as in many small towns because of this fact. Builders and shop owners have actually resorted to "skatestoppers", which are basically steel hinges that are fused to ledges and handrails to keep skaters away.
  4. POLICE: The age-old rivalry between skateboarders and police seems never ending. Although it is a common misconception that all skaters hate police and vice verse, there is an underlying displeasure in the hearts of many of these individuals that is mostly due to misunderstandings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EH6AYVn2yw4
  5. MUSIC: Music is a large part of skateboard culture. Just recently a new wave of music called "hardcore" has swept its way into the ipods of teen skateboarders. This music is one of the many genres of music to pierce the ears of these skateboarders, but for some reason is not accepted. This may be due to the "drop D" guitar tuning, the "double bass peddle", and lets not forget the screaming. But this is not the only music skaters enjoy. Skaters are individuals that think freely for themselves and everyone has a different story to tell and different music that they prefer. http://www.purevolume.com/MGMT
